The Canteen, Cockatoo Island

This is more a destination than a chance encounter - so if you are thinking 'where should we go today', then catch a ferry to Cockatoo Island.

So, having not had a coffee before leaving, I grabbed a takeaway coffee when we arrived. After that, it was a few hours exploring around the island, and lots of stopping to just watch the life of the harbour.

At the end, lunch was needed - and not having brought a picnic it was back to The Canteen to grab something to eat and another coffee (or hot chocolate) before leaving. A simple but yummy menu - an outdoor space - and a glorious view. Sydney in winter can be fantastic.
